Yukon Marriage License Quick Facts
Where Yukon Residents Get a Marriage License
Marriage licenses in Oklahoma are handled at the county level. Yukon falls in Canadian County. The Court Clerk's office in El Reno is the place to go. You cannot get a marriage license at Yukon City Hall or the Yukon Municipal Court. Those offices deal with city matters like code violations and utility payments. The Municipal Court sits at 532 W Main St in Yukon, but it has no role in marriage license work.
The Canadian County Court Clerk is Marie Hirst. Her office is at 301 N. Choctaw Avenue in El Reno, OK 73036. You can call ahead at (405) 295-6100 to check hours or ask about what you need to bring. Walk-ins are taken during business hours, which run Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. No appointment is needed. The drive from Yukon to the El Reno courthouse takes about 20 to 25 minutes on a normal day, mostly on US-66 or I-40.
You can also apply for a marriage license at any county in Oklahoma. That is an option under state law. Some Yukon couples choose to go to the Oklahoma County courthouse in Oklahoma City instead, since it is a similar distance in the other direction.
Yukon Marriage License Requirements
Oklahoma law sets the rules for marriage licenses statewide. Both people must go to the clerk's office at the same time. Bring a valid photo ID. A driver's license works fine. So does a passport, state ID, or military ID. A certified birth certificate with a raised seal is accepted too. Fill out the Marriage License Information Sheet using black or blue ink. Both applicants sign under oath in front of the clerk.
If you are 18 or older, there is no wait. The clerk hands you the license that same day. For those aged 16 or 17, a parent or legal guardian must be there in person. A certified birth certificate is also required for minors, and there is a 72-hour waiting period before the license is issued. No one under 16 can get a marriage license in Oklahoma except by court order, which requires a physician's letter. Under Title 43 of the Oklahoma Statutes, no blood test is needed. That requirement was dropped back in 2005.
There is no residency rule. You do not have to live in Yukon, Canadian County, or even Oklahoma to apply here.
Marriage License Fees in Yukon
The fee is $50. Every county in Oklahoma charges the same amount for a marriage license. There is one way to cut the cost. If both applicants complete at least four hours of premarital counseling from an approved provider, the fee drops to just $5. You must bring the original certificate. Copies and faxes are not accepted for the discount. The counseling can be done through a licensed therapist, a religious leader, or someone trained in a nationally recognized program like PREP. Oklahoma Statute 43 O.S. 5.1 lays out the full requirements for qualifying counseling programs.
Copies of existing marriage records cost $1.00 for the first page and $0.50 for each extra page. The Canadian County Court Clerk accepts cash, check, money order, and credit cards at the counter.
Yukon Marriage License Process
Once you have the license, here is what comes next. The ceremony must take place within 10 days. That is the window set by state law. An ordained minister, judge, or other authorized officiant performs the ceremony. Two adult witnesses need to be present and sign the license. As of November 1, 2022, ministers no longer need to file their credentials with the Court Clerk under O.S. Title 43, Section 7. After the wedding, return the signed license to the Canadian County Court Clerk within 30 days.
The license is valid anywhere in Oklahoma. So even though you pick it up in El Reno, you can hold the ceremony in Yukon, Oklahoma City, or anywhere else in the state. Many Yukon couples do exactly that.
Note: If either person was divorced in Oklahoma, state law requires a six-month wait before remarrying someone new.
