How to Get a Marriage License in Oklahoma County

First, call (405) 713-1705 to book your appointment. Both people must show up at the same time. You cannot send one person first and have the other come later. Bring a valid photo ID such as a driver's license, state ID card, passport, or certified birth certificate. If you hold a foreign birth certificate, it must include an official English translation.

The clerk will ask for your full legal name, date of birth, and the name you plan to use after the wedding. If you have been married before, bring information about how that ended. This could be a divorce decree or a death certificate for a former spouse. Oklahoma law under Title 43 of the Oklahoma Statutes sets a six-month waiting period after a divorce before you can marry again, unless you are remarrying the same person. Once the form is done and you pay the $50 fee, the license is issued on the spot. There is no waiting period for adults 18 and older.

The license is good for 10 days. Hold your ceremony within that window or the license expires. After the wedding, the officiant fills out the rest of the form and must return it to the Oklahoma County Court Clerk within 5 days. As of November 1, 2022, ministers no longer need to file their credentials with the Court Clerk per O.S. Title 43, Section 7. That means any ordained minister can perform the ceremony right away.

Note: Oklahoma County requires an appointment for all marriage license applications, so call (405) 713-1705 before visiting.

The rules are the same across all 77 Oklahoma counties. You must be at least 18 to apply on your own. If you are 16 or 17, one parent or legal guardian must come with you. They need to sign a consent form and show valid photo ID. A certified birth certificate is also required for minors (not a hospital copy). There is a 72-hour wait for anyone under 18. Nobody under 16 can get married without a court order.

No blood test is needed. Oklahoma dropped that requirement years back. There is no residency rule either. You can live in Texas, Kansas, or anywhere else and still get an Oklahoma County marriage license. The credit card holder must be present for the transaction if you choose to pay that way. Cash, checks, and money orders also work. Here is a quick list of what to bring:

  • Valid photo ID (driver's license, passport, state ID, or military ID)
  • Certified birth certificate if under 18
  • Social Security number
  • Divorce decree date or death certificate if previously married
  • Official English translation if birth certificate is in a foreign language

Marriage License Fees in Oklahoma County

The standard fee is $50. Pay it at the clerk's window when your application is processed. Oklahoma County accepts cash, checks, money orders, and credit or debit cards. Keep in mind the card holder must be the one present for the charge. You can cut the fee down to just $5 if you bring a premarital counseling certificate. That certificate must be the original document. Copies, faxes, and emails are not accepted.

Under 43 O.S. Section 5.1, both people must complete a minimum of four hours of counseling with a qualified provider. The certificate must clearly state that both parties finished the program. Qualified providers include licensed mental health professionals, members of the clergy, or people trained in programs like PREP. This $45 savings can make a real difference for couples on a tight budget.

Need copies of an existing marriage license? The first page costs $1.00. Each page after that is $0.50. A certified copy adds another $0.50 for the certification stamp. You can request copies in person at the clerk's office or submit a records request form by mail. Call (405) 713-1704 to ask about the electronic request form.

Wedding Ceremonies in Oklahoma County

Oklahoma County judges do not perform daily marriage ceremonies. This is different from some other counties where a judge may be available for a quick courthouse wedding. If you want to get married in Oklahoma County, you need to arrange your own officiant. After the ceremony, the officiant and two witnesses sign the marriage license. The completed form must go back to the Oklahoma County Court Clerk within 5 days. Make sure your officiant knows about this deadline. Late returns can cause problems with your record.
