How to Apply for a Norman Marriage License

Both people must show up at the same time. Bring valid photo ID. The clerk will ask for full legal names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, and the names you want to use after the wedding. If you have been married before, bring the date of your divorce or a death certificate for a former spouse. Under Title 43 of the Oklahoma Statutes, Oklahoma has a six-month waiting period after a divorce before you can remarry. The only way around it is if you are marrying the same former spouse.

Pay the $50 fee at the window. The Norman marriage license is printed right away for adults 18 and older. No waiting period. The license stays valid for 10 days. Hold your ceremony within that window. After the wedding, the officiant fills out the rest of the form and sends it back to the Cleveland County Court Clerk within 5 days. Two witnesses must sign the license at the ceremony. Ministers no longer need to file credentials with the clerk as of November 2022, per O.S. Title 43, Section 7.

Note: Cleveland County judges do not perform courthouse marriages, so you must arrange your own officiant before applying for a Norman marriage license.

State law sets the rules for all 77 counties. You need to be 18 to apply on your own. Ages 16 and 17 need a parent or guardian there in person with signed consent and a certified birth certificate. That also means a 72-hour wait. Under 16 needs a court order. No blood test is required. Oklahoma got rid of that in 2005.

No residency requirement exists. You can live in any state and still get a Norman marriage license. Foreign birth certificates must include an official English translation. Here is what to bring to the Cleveland County courthouse:

  • Valid photo ID (driver's license, passport, state ID, military ID)
  • Social Security number for both people
  • Divorce decree date if previously married
  • Death certificate if a former spouse has died
  • Certified birth certificate for anyone under 18
