Shawnee Marriage License Requirements

Oklahoma law sets the rules, and they apply the same way in every county. Both applicants must appear at the same time. Bring a valid photo ID. Driver's license, passport, state-issued ID, military ID, or a certified birth certificate with a raised seal are all accepted. Fill out the application in black or blue ink. Both people sign under oath in front of the clerk.

Adults 18 and older get their license the same day with no waiting period. If either applicant is 16 or 17, a parent or legal guardian must be present. A certified birth certificate is needed for minors, and there is a 72-hour wait. No one under 16 can marry except by court order under Title 43 of the Oklahoma Statutes. No blood test is required. Oklahoma dropped that rule back in January 2005. There is no residency requirement either, so you do not have to live in Shawnee or Pottawatomie County.

Marriage License Fees in Shawnee

A standard marriage license costs $50 in Pottawatomie County. That is the same statewide fee. Couples who complete at least four hours of premarital counseling can pay just $5. You must bring the original certificate from the counselor to the clerk's office. Copies, faxes, and emails do not count. The counseling must meet requirements laid out in Oklahoma Statute 43 O.S. 5.1. Approved providers include licensed therapists, religious leaders, and people trained in programs like PREP.

Copies of existing records cost $1.00 for the first page and $0.50 for each additional page. Cash is accepted at the counter.

After You Get Your Shawnee Marriage License

The license is good for 10 days. Plan your ceremony within that window. An ordained minister, judge, or retired judge must officiate. Two adult witnesses are required at the ceremony. They both sign the license along with the officiant. Since November 1, 2022, ministers do not need to file credentials with the Court Clerk. That change came under O.S. Title 43, Section 7.

Return the signed license to the Pottawatomie County Court Clerk within 30 days after the ceremony. The license is valid anywhere in Oklahoma. You can pick it up in Shawnee and have the wedding in Oklahoma City, Norman, or any other place in the state. The Citizen Potawatomi Nation also has a presence in Shawnee, with their complex at 1601 S. Gordon Cooper Drive, though tribal marriage records are a separate matter from county marriage licenses.

Note: If either person was divorced in Oklahoma, state law requires a six-month wait before marrying someone new.
