How to Get a Marriage License in Ottawa County

Both people must go to the courthouse together. You cannot send one person alone. Each of you needs a valid photo ID. A driver's license is the most common form. Passports, state IDs, and military IDs all work too. The clerk asks for your full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, and what name you want to use after the marriage. If you were married before, you need the date that marriage ended.

Pay the $50 fee and the clerk issues the license the same visit. Adults 18 and over have no waiting period under Oklahoma Statutes Title 43. You can hold your wedding ceremony that very day if you want. The license stays valid for 10 days. Your ceremony must take place before it expires. After the wedding, the officiant completes the form and returns it to the Ottawa County Court Clerk so it can become part of the permanent record.

Ministers and other officiants no longer need to file their credentials with the Court Clerk. That rule changed statewide on November 1, 2022, under O.S. Title 43, Section 7.

Oklahoma law applies the same across all counties. You need to be 18 to apply on your own. If you are 16 or 17, a parent or legal guardian must come along. The parent signs a consent form and shows valid ID. The minor needs a certified birth certificate with a raised seal. A 72-hour waiting period applies for anyone under 18. People under 16 cannot get a marriage license unless they have a court order, which is very uncommon.

No blood test. No residency rule. You can live in Kansas, Missouri, or any other state and still apply for a marriage license in Ottawa County. The license can be used for a ceremony anywhere in Oklahoma. Bring these things with you:

  • Valid photo ID for both people
  • Social Security numbers
  • Certified birth certificate if under 18
  • Divorce decree date or proof of how prior marriage ended
  • Foreign birth certificate translation if applicable

Note: Ottawa County's Court Clerk office closes for lunch from noon to 1:00 PM, so time your visit accordingly.

Ottawa County Marriage License Fees

The fee is $50 for a standard marriage license. This is the same price at every courthouse in Oklahoma. If both people complete a premarital counseling program, the fee drops to just $5. That is a $45 savings. The counseling must be at least four hours long and must be done by a qualified provider. You must present the original certificate at the clerk's office. No copies, no faxes, no digital versions. The requirements for who counts as a qualified provider are spelled out in 43 O.S. Section 5.1.

Record copies cost $1 for the first page. Each page after that is $0.50. Certified copies carry an extra certification fee. Call (918) 542-2801 to ask about payment methods and to confirm current fees before you visit the Ottawa County courthouse.
