Le Flore County was named after the Le Flore family of the Choctaw Nation. It covers a large part of southeastern Oklahoma, stretching along the Arkansas border. The county seat of Poteau is centrally located and serves as the hub for all county government offices. Despite the county's large geographic area, there is only one Court Clerk's office for marriage license needs. Some residents in the northern or southern ends of the county face a significant drive to reach Poteau.

If you are coming from out of town, a phone call to (918) 647-3181 can confirm hours and help you plan your visit. The clerk can also tell you what payment methods they accept and whether a specific record is in their files.

Apply for a Le Flore County Marriage License

Both applicants must appear in person at the Le Flore County Court Clerk's office. You have to go together. One person cannot fill out the form alone. Each of you needs a valid photo ID. Acceptable forms include a driver's license, state-issued ID, passport, or military ID. The clerk checks your identity and age from the ID before moving forward.

Fill out the application at the clerk's window. It asks for full names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and a list of previous marriages. Oklahoma Statutes Title 43, Section 5 requires you to disclose every prior marriage and how it ended. Divorced applicants face a six-month waiting period before they can apply for a new marriage license in Oklahoma. The exception: if you plan to remarry your former spouse. The Le Flore County clerk may want to see a copy of your final divorce decree if the date is within the last six months.

For applicants 18 and older, the marriage license is ready the same day. No waiting. The Le Flore County marriage license is valid for 10 days. You must hold the ceremony within that time. After the wedding, the person who performed it and two adult witnesses sign the license. Return it to the Court Clerk. The law gives you up to 30 days, but five days is the preferred turnaround. Under Title 43, Section 7, judges, retired judges, and ordained ministers can all officiate the wedding.

The legal age to apply without extra steps is 18. Minors aged 16 or 17 can apply in Le Flore County if a parent or legal guardian appears with them and signs a consent form. A 72-hour waiting period also applies for minor applicants. Under Oklahoma law, no person under 16 can receive a marriage license unless a court specifically allows it.

There is no blood test requirement. Oklahoma ended that in 2005. No residency requirement exists either. You can live in another state and still get a marriage license from the Le Flore County Court Clerk. The license works anywhere in Oklahoma, so the ceremony does not have to take place in Le Flore County itself.
