How to Apply for a Marriage License in Garfield County

Getting a marriage license in Garfield County works the same as the rest of Oklahoma. Both people show up at the Court Clerk's office in Enid. You fill out the application form together. Each person needs to bring a valid ID such as a driver's license, state ID, passport, or birth certificate. The clerk checks your documents and issues the license on the spot. Adults 18 and older face no waiting period at all under Oklahoma Statutes Title 43, so you can get your marriage license and have the ceremony the same day if you want.

The Garfield County marriage license is valid for 10 days after it is issued. Your ceremony must take place within that window. After the wedding, the officiant and two adult witnesses sign the license. Then you return it to the Garfield County Court Clerk. The signed license must come back within 5 days, though the law gives you up to 30 days. When completing the license, you need to use the book and page number the clerk gives you.

Ministers who want to perform marriages in Garfield County can register their credentials with the Court Clerk at no cost. As of November 1, 2022, ordained ministers are no longer required to file credentials before performing a ceremony under O.S. Title 43, Section 7. Judges and retired judges can also officiate. No judges at the Garfield County Courthouse perform wedding ceremonies, so you will need to find your own officiant.

The rules are simple for most couples. If you are 18 or older, bring a valid photo ID and you are set. There is no blood test. Oklahoma dropped that rule on January 1, 2005. There is no residency requirement either. You do not have to live in Garfield County or even in Oklahoma to apply here.

Younger applicants face more steps. If you are 16 or 17, a custodial parent must come with you. That parent needs to show their divorce decree if they have custody through a court order. The minor needs both a birth certificate and a photo ID. There is a 72-hour wait between when you apply and when the clerk hands over the license. Nobody under 16 can get a marriage license in Garfield County unless a court specifically orders it along with a physician's letter.

  • Valid driver's license, state ID, passport, or certified birth certificate
  • Both applicants must appear in person together
  • Foreign IDs require a translated birth certificate
  • Persons divorced in Oklahoma must wait 6 months before remarrying someone new
  • Two adult witnesses needed at the ceremony

Note: The 6-month divorce waiting period does not apply if you are remarrying your former spouse.

Marriage License Fees in Garfield County

The standard marriage license fee in Garfield County is $50. Cash only. The office does not take credit cards, checks, or money orders for the license itself. If you bring an original premarital counseling certificate showing that both parties finished at least four hours of counseling, the fee drops to just $5. That certificate must be the original document. Copies and faxes will not work. Under Oklahoma Statutes Title 43, Section 5.1, the counseling can come from a licensed mental health professional, a religious institution representative, or a person trained in a nationally recognized program like PREP.

Copy fees are low. The first page of any record costs $1. Each additional page is 50 cents. Add another 50 cents for certification. These small fees apply when you request copies of existing Garfield County marriage license records.
