How to Apply for a Coal County Marriage License
Both people must go to the Court Clerk's office at the same time. You fill out the application and sign it under oath in front of the clerk. Bring valid ID to prove your name and age. A driver's license, birth certificate, passport, or military ID all work.
Adults 18 and older get their license the same day with no wait. Minors aged 16 or 17 must have a parent or guardian present to consent. A 72-hour waiting period applies for all applicants under 18. Oklahoma does not allow anyone under 16 to get a marriage license except by court order. No blood test is needed. There is no rule that says you must live in Coal County to apply here.
Once issued, the marriage license is valid for 10 days. The ceremony must take place within that time. After the wedding, the officiant and two witnesses aged 18 or older sign the document. The signed license goes back to the Coal County Court Clerk within 30 days. Under Oklahoma Statutes Title 43, Section 7, judges, retired judges, and ordained ministers can all perform the marriage ceremony. Since November 2022, ministers do not have to file their credentials with the Court Clerk first.
